The game is good and I've only experienced 1/8 of what the game's story has to offer it's very good from someone who never had MMO's click for them. The game is free to play but there is a subscription model if you want to get the endgame stuff like raids, your free character maxes out at lvl 60 which is fine since that's where the campaign ends, but you can go up to lvl 80 with a premium account The game then gives them a preset ability which you can fine tune of you wish, just set your companion to healer and you will never die. You can get and build friendships or romances with, it's a cool idea but it's really just a "pick your favorite personality and have them make quips with you on your journey and occasionally do a side quest for them." Since they all can do the exact same thing, you set your companion to one of 3 builds, healer, tank, and assault. There are a ton of companions you can get as you travel to a shitton of planets. But the game allows you to make choices (mostly good guy option or bad guy option) that has some minor effects on how the story plays out, they were cool to see and kept me engaged for some of the more boring parts of the story. I played the bounty hunter story and it was fun, but it can get very repetitive and very boring at sections. I finished one of the EIGHT campaigns, and it took me 87 hours almost a full year worth of playing. You pick one of 4 classes for either side of the force, 2 saber classes and 2 blaster classes.
Star Wars the Old Republic is a really weird game, it's an MMO but has a heavy focus on it's storytelling.
